How much CO₂ is in your refrigerant?
Pick the refrigerant and enter the quantity. You'll see the CO₂ equivalent and the rules that apply.
CO₂ equivalent
196.1tonnes CO₂e
50 kg × GWP 3922 ÷ 1000
What this means
- GWP of 2500 or more: since 2025 refrigeration equipment may only be topped up with recycled or reclaimed gas, until 2030. Recycled gas only by the company that recovered it or for which it was recovered.
- For air conditioning and heat pumps this applies since 2026, until 2032.
- Reclaimed refrigerant sits outside the EU quota. That is why recovered gas has value.
Explained
How do you convert kilos of refrigerant into CO₂ equivalent?
Multiply the kilos by the refrigerant's GWP and divide by 1000. That gives tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. Example: 10 kg of R404A with a GWP of 3922 is 39.2 tonnes CO₂e.
Why does CO₂ equivalent matter?
The F-gas Regulation works in CO₂ equivalent: leak check frequency, the EU quota and the servicing bans all depend on it. It is also the figure for your ESG report.
Which GWP values does this calculator use?
The values used for the EU F-gas rules, as listed in Regulation (EU) 2024/573. Each refrigerant page lists the source.
